festivals
-February 6th. the anniversary of the birth of Bob Marley commemorates proclaimed a national holiday. For 4 days and music festivals are held in St-Anne (Nine-Miles), birthplace of the singer.
-April 8. Jamaica Carnival. Carnival fever invades the island for 9 days with parades, dancing, costume contests and a "gang war" using its best artistic expressions.
--August 6. Independence Day. A parade of floats this day walking the streets of Kingston, representing the achievements of Jamaicans in the most diverse areas. Colorful floats, costumed groups, music trucks, classic cars and instrumental bands enliven the streets of the capital of Jamaica during this spectacular festival. The day before the Independence Day Sunday Emancipation Day is celebrated.
-Third Monday in October. the National Heroes Day is celebrated, a day when the whole country remembers its 7 national heroes.
Unusual religious ceremonies
There are two types of Rastafarian religious ceremonies. An argument is a simple event where the Rastas gather, smoke pot and discuss religious and social issues. The person with the honor of lighting the grass gives a short prayer before doing so, and the pipe is always passed in the oppsite direction to clockwise.
A Binghi or grounation is a party it is believed that the word refers to ancient, and now extinct, order of militant blacks East Africa vowed to end oppresion. The Binghis are characterized by frequent dancing, singing, feasting and smoking ganja, and they can last several days.
